His friends, joined by momentarily by and his uncle, arrive to take Azula down together, but she injures and utilizes the ensuing chaos to escape. To Iroh's dismay, Zuko instead chooses to help Azula attack the Avatar. The team remain to find out when exactly the solar eclipse is whilst Toph tries to save the crew by trying to stop the sinking of the library from the outside. However, the spirit of the library, Wan Shi Tong, begins to sink the library, thinking that Sokka will only use the knowledge to fuel a war. After a discussion with Iroh the team decides to split up: Sokka, Suki, and Toph head to stop the Fire Nation's air fleet, the masters head to reclaim Ba Sing Se, and Katara, Zuko, and Appa head to defeat Azula. She runs away from home and joins Aang.
The fearful sandbender finally confesses saying that he sold him to some merchants but he probably is in Ba Sing Se by now. They are to be escorted to Omashu, where Aang intends to find King Bumi to teach him earthbending. Azula pretends to surrender, only to wound Iroh with a lightning blast before making her escape. As Zuko defends the family against abusive Earth Kingdom soldiers, he reveals his identity as the Fire Prince at the battle's end, and the boy, his family, and the townspeople reject him because of it. After revealing his identity to the town's people, Zuko has flashbacks about the disappearance of his mother, his grandfather's funeral, and Ozai's crowning as Fire Lord. Zuko must defy his banishment to follow Aang. Zuko confronts his father and tells him that he's going to join the Avatar.
Afterwards, Zuko is crowned Fire Lord and promises a better future for the world. Meanwhile, , Zuko's sister, chases Aang. After seeing her unique style of Earthbending, Aang wants Toph to become his teacher, but there are complications with Toph's family. While Zuko and Iroh are on a ferry to Ba Sing Se, they meet , who is trying to turn his life around. However, Toph falls into the sea after the serpent breaks it so Suki saves her. They head to Ba Sing Se's outer wall only to find a drill on a direct path towards it. However, with encouragement from his uncle, Zuko decides to free the sky-bison and give up the Blue Spirit alter-ego forever.
The gang then continues to Ba Sing Se, now with two goals to complete in the city. After Zuko is taken down protecting Katara from Azula, Katara fights and manages to restrain Azula. Aang searches for Appa, while Katara struggles to keep everyone together so they can survive in the vast desert while Sokka begins acting crazy because of Cactus juice in the desert. After finding important information concerning the war with the Fire Nation, Appa ends up kidnapped. Aang takes his place as the next Avatar, changing his attire in the process. Meanwhile, Zuko and Iroh make crucial mistakes which begin to attract Jet's suspicions.
Song, a young and compassionate healer, shows Zuko the effects of war from a normal citizen's perspective. His last attempt, challenging Zuko to a sword fight, ends in his own arrest. The show also received acclaim for its visual appeal. Zuko has flashbacks about his life before banishment, such as incidents with his sister Azula and his loving mother. If in doubt, do not use. Elsewhere, Aang interrogates the sandbenders who took Appa but the sandbender who kidnapped Appa denies the allegations despite Toph's persistence that it was him and that he put a muzzle on him. By fortune, Suki and the Kyoshi warriors come across Appa and help him recover from his injuries, but the warriors are attacked when they encounter Azula and her team, still not far outside Ba Sing Se and attempting to infiltrate it.

The group travels deep into a massive and forbidding desert and eventually locate an entrance to the library, but Toph, who is unnerved by sand because it partially disrupts her ability to sense her surroundings with her bending, refuses to descend with the others and stays outside with. The group finally makes it to Ba Sing Se only to find the Fire Nation is about to send a gigantic drill to penetrate the titanic outermost walls of the capital region, which have protected the people within, including the Earth Kingdom leadership, form more than a century of Fire Nation assault. Together with Katara, Sokka, Momo, and Appa, he journeys across the Earth Kingdom in search of an Earthbending mentor. Meanwhile, due to their actions at the North Pole, and are declared enemies of the Fire Nation and desert their country, becoming fugitives in the Earth Kingdom. Ty Lee attacks the Terra Team by blocking their chi which makes Sokka and Toph conclude that hitting pressure points could also work on the drill by hitting it from the inside.
